There are many factors that contribute to the success of a data governance program. The keys are strong executive support, a well-defined strategy and roadmap, strong organizational oversight, a tactical and iterative implementation plan, an effective change management strategy, and the proper tools and technical expertise. (See figure 2.)
The key is to create a culture of data governance from the ground up. The best way to do this is to inject data governance into the projects and business-as-usual activities, something we call “governance by design.” This grassroots approach creates positive habits of mind and activity that spill over to other initiatives in an ever-widening circle.
