State of Data Products

Data products are hot because they address three pervasive problems that organizations face when using data: 1) users can’t find the data they need 2) when they find it, they can’t access it and 3) when they access it, they don’t trust it.

Consequently, almost three-quarters (74%) of organizations have implemented data products or are in the process of doing so. (See figure 1.) Their reasons for implementing data products are “need for trustworthy data” (69%), the “need to share data internally” (63%), and need for reusable components (51%). (See figure 2.)

The biggest challenges organizations face when implementing data products are: “Creating a data product mindset” (57%), “defining data products” (54%), and “Promoting data products” and “Gaining adoption for data products” both 37%, followed by “Governing data products” (34%). (See figure 3.)

Charts are based on preliminary results from an Eckerson Group survey on data products conducted in December 2023.
