Data Catalog Applications

Given the rapid pace of innovation in the data catalog space, it’s not surprising that a data catalog can support dozens of applications.

There three categories of applications: defensive, offensive, and curation. Defensive applications focus on compliance with data privacy and security regulations, both internal and external, as well as data access controls and lifecycle management.

Offensive applications focus on applications that improve the organizations competitive positioning by giving users quicker access to trustworthy. Self-service analytics, cloud migration, data sharing, and impact analysis are the primary offensive applications.

Finally, curation applications help organization better govern data by governing data definitions, monitoring data defects and anomalies (data observability), managing policies, spawning workflows, and other governance tasks.
